Breed Description


Overview:

The Boerboel is a mastiff-looking heavily built dog originating from South Africa where the dog is viewed as an excellent companion and guard dog.  The believe is that the breed was created from interbreeding native African canine species with breeds brought into South Africa from Dutch, French, and British settlers.

Character: 

The Boerboel is an intelligent, trainable and managable breed with strong protective instinct, and loyal to members of the family. The dog is also steadfast and calm, with a balanced and confident disposition. They are fearless and shows courage when threatened.

The shoulder-height is Male 64–70 cm (25–28 in), Female 59–65 cm (23–26 in).


Weight:

Male: 70 – 90 kg, Female: 70 – 90 kg.


Temperament:

The Boerboel is manageable, reliable, obedient and intelligent with strong protective instincts.  It is self-confident and fearless. Uncontrollably aggressive and fearful Boerboels are unacceptable. They are quite lovable when energetic and will stop at nothing to protect their loved ones to the death. Early training is recommended for this breed at puppy stage.


Coat:

The Boerboel has an outer coat that is normally coarse and straight, and an undercoat that is soft and dense. They have a short, dense, smooth, soft, and shiny coat. Their coat color ranges from various shades of red, brown, or fawn with black mask around the mouth that sometimes extends to their eyes and ears.


Care:

The Boerboel required little grooming being an average shedder. Occasional brushing and a monthly bath and nail trim is all that this breed needs.


Training:

The Boerboels requires a significant commitment in time and energy from their owners due to their need for training and proper socialization in other to achieve good co-existence with the dog. Positive reinforcement training techniques is recommended for the training of this breed. Forceful training of this dog can result to a detrimental psychological health and could work against the trainer or owner as the dog might misbehave later in future.


Characteristics:

The Boerboel is a large dog. It has prominent and well-developed musculature over the entire body with buoyant movement –an impressive and imposing figure of strength.
