Why many Nigerians love Caucasian breed of Dog

I got an anonymous call one day from someone looking for a security dog for a house he newly built here in Abuja. He first asked if I had dogs for sale and I answered him that we have some, I went ahead to ask him the breed he was looking for. He answered: “Caucasian”. Later in the conversation I asked him why he prefers the Caucasian breed and he started to describe his neighbor’s dog emphasizing the size and the thick fur of the dog. He described the dog to look like a lion with mane. He went ahead to narrate events & encounters with the dog that he likes.

The man in the brief story above had to ask the owner of the dog details regarding the breed, and a lot of other things before he actually called me but in many cases those calls continue with a riddle before we actually arrive at the breed name. What I’m trying to say is that many know the dog but can hardly say the breed name. Some people will just tell you that the dog looks like lion.

The first striking reason why Nigerians love the Caucasian breed is their size and height. The Caucasian is a very massive dog although so many dogs exist that has a close resemblance to the pure breed of this dog and are generally classified as Caucasian in Nigeria wrongly but the very pure one is a massive dog.

The second reason people love this breed is the fur that is very thick and mostly gray and black in color. Some are also described to be wearing ‘socks’ meaning that they have white color markings on some of their legs. This thick fur gives people the impression that they look like lions.

There is a general high rating for Caucasian breeds among the best dogs for security in Nigeria mostly by residential dog owners against security agencies that are still stuck to German shepherds. The natural stranger-resisting attitude of Caucasians has made many Nigerians to love this dog such that most dog owners use this dog for security.

The Caucasian breed has a ready market if you are a breeder of the dog. The Caucasian breed has been the most requested dog in recent times here in Nigeria.

So many Nigerians also liken the breed to wolves. There might be a close resemblance between Caucasian breed and wolves in terms of the fur or coat color but I doubt the size difference.

Many Nigerians buy the Caucasian breed as alternative to German shepherd because it is believed that they are good with kids. Most families are always careful with the breed they buy due to this issue. Nobody wants dog bite on their children from their own dog.
