Learning dog coat colors and their combinations can be a herculean task that most people just choose simple color names to designate dog coat colors. Brindle colored dogs usually present a sort of confusion. This color comes in a black and tan colors in disjointed curly marks sometimes referred to as “tiger-marks” but not as prominent as the tiger marks. There is trindle for 3 colors looking like brindle – 2colors.

According to The Brindle Gene (doggenetics.co.uk) brindle is one of the recessive genes on the K locus. The k genes that express to give the brindle color is actually a recessive gene to the big K which is dominant. The big K is dominant and when present dominates the small k and presents its own color which might any other solid color. In the absence of the big K, the brindle color expressed by the small k tends to manifest against the other k type genes.

Let me emphasize that many animals including horses, cattle, cats, hares etc. also come with brindle color so it’s a general color that can manifest in animals.

So why do people go crazy about brindle color?

The brindle is a very unique color that rarely manifests in dogs and as such makes the dog look different. The brindle color is not very common and most Nigerians love things that are very rare and unique.

The brindle color, especially on mastiff dog breeds tend to look more monstrous than they will normally look without it. Someone once made a comment like “The dog looked like a tiger and very fierce” –referring to a brindle colored Bullmastiff.

The brindle colors can have a camouflage tendency and can obscure the dog lying on tan colored flour, wooden floor or a garden floor. Also it might be a little difficult to easily see them in the dark environment.

Some brindle colored dogs possess a white stripe on the face and chest making them even more beautiful.
