My dog made me a millionaire

Three years ago, one of our client’s wife brought their puppies for their routine deworming grudgingly. She came into the clinic and asked my staff to come with her to the car to pick the dogs. My staff came back to the clinic with 2 German shepherd dogs of about 6 months of age. After we were done with the dogs, my staff was trying to make me follow them to the car by giving me some signal. First, I didn’t understand the sign. He then came close to tell me that the woman actually brought the dogs in the boot of the car and that I should come to make sure the dogs are not kept in the boot.

He knows I will never tolerate that inhuman treatment of those puppies. So I pretended to be going outside with them only to see the woman opening the boot of the car for my staff to squeeze the puppies. I have to raise alarm immediately. I told the woman the implication of what she was about to do but she refused. While we were arguing outside trying to convince the woman to keep the dogs at the back seat another client came with his dogs. He saw me outside and came close to me, waiting for us to be done with the woman.

The woman was seriously complaining that she ‘hates’ dogs but due to the fact that her husband traveled she had no choice but to bring them to the clinic. She explained further that the dogs were handled by her security man and she can’t even touch them. The other client was watching the scenario and made no comments while we tried to keep the puppies chained at the back seat for the lady.

When the woman was gone, the other client said to us that if that lady was his wife that he will just divorce her. I laughed at it trying to explain to him that some people don’t just like animals no matter the type. The man continued passionately repeating his previous statement that he will not hesitate to get a divorce. I just ended up asking him why. And he said that his dog made him a millionaire that he is today. He was willing to explain further while we all listened to his story.

He told us that he was a hopeless youth out of the school who just concluded his NYSC. He applied for job in so many institutions but got none. He started to do his petty business (he didn’t specify which business). He had a female Rottweiler puppy given to him by his friend whose bitch gave birth to 8 puppies. He got it free but promised to give his friend one puppy when the puppy grows and gives birth. He took good care of the dog because the dog was the only company he had.

The dog would welcome him after the days’ hustle and it made him happy. He goes from one restaurant to another to collect leftover meals to feed the dog. And 8 months into the dogs life she came on heat. He quickly found a male to mate her disregarding advice from his friend to skip the first heat. He used his last money to pay for the male service. He nurtured the pregnant bitch until she littered 10 puppies.

According to him, he tried his best to care for her puppies and all the puppies survived. He sold some of the puppies at #120,000 each. He said that he reserved the bigger puppies, about 2 of them and some people induced him with #150,000 to buy each of those ones. And that was a big break for him. He invested some of the money in his business, called a vet for the first time to attend to the bitch which he couldn’t afford at first and he even bought a land with part of the money.

He took the dog business very seriously and the second litter was another breakthrough for him because his father was sick and he was able to pay his hospital bills with the money and even got married with part of the proceeds.

You can literally see the passion in his eyes while he was telling the story trying to justify his statement. And lastly, he said to me: “Doctor, my dog made me a millionaire and I thank God for her!” Pointing towards my chest. It was an emotional moment at the clinic. My staff was so grateful for the story thanking God that the scenario played out in the first place and the man saw it.
