Why you can rely on dogs than your security personnel

It’s a common occurrence to see criminals break into people’s properties after conspiring with the security men in their facilities or homes. There are some other cases where security men are tied up under gunpoint by criminals before carrying out their criminal acts. During the recession in Nigeria, there were rising cases of criminals breaking into people’s homes to steal their belongings. There were stories where the dogs in some homes helped to stop these criminals.

A case occurred in Port Harcourt of Nigeria, not during the recession, where a Rottweiler took on 7 criminals who intended to break into the home of one family. The criminals tried to use the fence to access the property. They used their tools to cut and disable electric fence wires. The first among the gang jumped in and was greeted by a huge Rottweiler who started to give him numerous bites as he was struggling.

The family was able to hear the growling noise from their dog at the unholy hour of 1 am and saw that the dog was attacking a stranger. Thanks to the security lights beaming around the house. They started to make phone calls to alert the police and neighbors. The rest of the gang came in later with their guns. They started to use their gun to beat the dog to release their gang member. They were talking with hush voices while the dog was growling very loudly. The dog went for the second guy with the gun and finally got a shot in his arm through his armpit region.

The criminals did not expect the confrontation because they did not hear the dog bark even once. The security guy at the gate who was sleeping while the criminals were making their way into the property saw the action and locked himself inside the security house close to the gate. The bullet shot crippled the dog while the criminals took their wounded members and ran out knowing that the police must have been alerted. They broke the key locks to the gate to make their way out.

The owner of this dog gave God the glory and swore to give the dog the best of veterinary care no matter what it will cost. The dog was brought to our Veterinary School Teaching Hospital in the University of Nigeria when I was there as a veterinary student. I was so interested in the story because that was my first close encounter to that breed of dog.

The point here remains that the dog had the guts to attack the criminals while the security personnel locked himself inside the security house to secure himself. In some other cases, the dogs will bark endlessly to deter the criminals while the security personnel will start looking for a hiding place. The truth is that Nigeria is not like some developed societies where guns allowed to be used by private security personnel to secure anything.

Dogs are unbiased when it comes to security because they quickly recognize strangers and intruders and starts to take action immediately by barking or attacking when they are free to do so.
