Most common lies told by desperate dog sellers in Nigeria
I had to bring out books of dog breeds to show him what a Rottweiler looked like and he asked me: “what of German Rottweiler?†and I was like: “here we go againâ€. Which one is German Rottweiler? Rottweiler is one breed to the best of my knowledge from all the sources I know. I never read varieties of Rottweiler which might include a German Rottweiler or maybe American Rottweiler or possibly Russian Rottweiler I believe Rottweiler remains Rottweiler with his own breed standards according to Kennel clubs like American Kennel Club and others.
The man was seriously brain washed by the seller to believe all those stuff. The man eventually went to bring the dog seller to come and explain to us. The seller arrived with the man and started to make serious blunders like the fact that the dogs were born without tail and all sorts of things. My principal veterinarian had to intervene to explain to the owner that we will not compromise our reputation just to please them and that if he won’t take my own explanation then he should go elsewhere but that his puppy will not be registered as German Rottweiler in the Clinic – case closed. This story is one of many such encounter even before I founded fairvet Animal clinic.
Let me tell you other lies:
· A mixed bullmastiff was sold to someone as German Bulldog: Please who have heard of this breed?
· A dog with slanted back is regarded as pure breed German shepherd even when it has the Rottweiler color! Popularly referred to as “Slant-backâ€.
· Puppies with standing ears is a German shepherd dog even when his coat color suggests a local primitive dog or even when the mother(bitch) is a local breed and the father(male) is a mixed German shepherd.
· Puppies with some folds on the face is a Neapolitan mastiff especially when they have colors closer to Neapolitan mastiff even the dog is all tan color like an English mastiff.
· When you mix a Rottweiler and a German shepherd the puppies that have the Rott colors are Rotts and the puppies with German shepherd colors are German shepherds. How can this be when the parents are not the same breed?
· Etc.
The major reason why many of this guys do this is because of money. They try to make this puppies look expensive and reputable to the unsuspecting buyer. These sellers don’t like people that know the truth because they know they will eventually be exposed. Most of them will discourage buyers from going to a veterinary clinic and will prefer to bring their own vets or even do the dog care for them just to retain the buyer who has bought into their lies.
Disclaimer:
This article is not to discredit all dog sellers or label them as mischievous but to point to a trend that has taken root in our environment here in Nigeria. The main intention of this write-up is to encourage buyers to consult well before spending their hard earned money on a puppy that may not be what they want.
