Breed Description


Overview:

The Spinone Italiano is an ideal hunter’s companion. They also make excellent family pet as long as they get enough exercises. They are highly regarded by field sports people who will find it very reliable as a working dog. They are affectionate and loyal to their family.

Character:

These dogs are equable and friendly, very gentle-natured and affectionate, but they can have a mind of their own. They are mad about water and are all-round field sport dogs which have a very fine scenting nose.

 

Height:

The shoulder-height is 60 – 70cm (23 ½ - 27 ½ 2in) for dogs and 58 – 65cm (22 ½ - 251/2 2in) for bitches. The weight is 28 – 37 kg (61 ½ - 81 ½ 2lb).

34-39kg for dogs and 29-34kg for bitches

 

Temperament:

This breed gets on well with its own kind and with other household animals. And they make outstanding playmates for children. Both wanted and unwanted visitors are likely to be treated to a warm welcome.

 

Coat:

The rough, thick, wire-haired coat lies reasonably flat. The permissible colour are plain white, white with orange makings or flecks, white with brown marking or roan – with and without larger brown marking.

 

Care:

Groom the Spinone occasionally with a coarse society trimming them is strictly against breed society standards. Check that the ear passage are clean and trim excess hair between the pads of the feet.

 

Training:

 Do not expect miracles from this breed I n terms of obedience because they have mind of their own. Despite this, they are gentle-natured and affectionate enough to want to please you provided you do not expect too much. Remember that the Spinone is likely to follow its nose if it picks up an interesting scent.  Make sure that your garden is well fenced and never let the dog run off the lead unless closely supervised.
