Breed Description

Overview:

The Italian Greyhound is a gentle and affectionate dog that loves to hunt small games and are very easy dogs to train. They are very loyal to the family and their handler.

Country of origin:

Egypt/Italy

Size type:

Small dog breeds

Breed group:

Toy dog breeds (AKC)

Character:

These are gentle, affectionate, and cheerful dogs that are quick and active, intelligent and complaint.

Height:

32-38cm

Weight:

3-7kg

Temperament:

These dogs get on well with other dogs and cats and children as well, but do not let the children treat the dogs as a toy. It is obvious they do not make good playmates for Rottweiler. They usually get on well with their own breed and it is recommended that you have more than one of them.

Coat:

The coat is fine and short. The colour of this breed is frequently a greyish yellow, black or slate, perhaps with white on the chest and feet. Flecked versions exist but they are not accepted in all countries.

Care:

These dogs need little grooming. It is usually sufficient to wipe the dog with a cloth to make the coat shine. It is necessary to check the teeth regularly because tartar is prevalent with this breed. The adult dog is certainly not delicate, but until they are about eighteen months old, they can break a leg easily.

Training:

Generally, these dogs are not difficult to train provided their handlers are consistent with them. They are naughty and are aware they are. It is important to see the naughty side when they go wrong but this does not mean allowing them to take liberties.
