Breed Description

Overview:

The Lakeland Terrier is an ideal family pet. It is sportive and intelligent. It is probably the friendliest Terrier both with children and other dogs. They are uncertain with strangers and like to exercise a lot.

Country of origin:

England

Size type:

Small dog breeds

Character:

This is a sportive, intelligent and affectionate dog which is a good watchdog, self-confident and loving with children, and also lively and cheerful.

Breed group:

Terrier dog breeds (AKC)

Height:

33-38cm

Weight:

7-8kg

Temperament:

Lakelands get on well with children and also with other dogs-not common among Terriers. They can be uncertain of strangers but this does not usually become extreme. Teach them when they are young to get on well with cats and other household animals, so that they will not chase them later.

Coat:

The coat is thick, hard, and sheds water. It can be black and tan, blue and tan, red-grey, red, wheaten, liver, blue, or black in colour.

Care:

The Lakeland Terrier needs its coat to be plucked two or three times a year, meaning removal of the old hair by pulling it out by hand. Remove loose hairs also from ear passages and trim excess hair between the pads of the feet. The coats of show dogs require more intensive grooming.

Training:

This sportive dog learns quite easily. Because of this  make sure that the training is full of variety and offers the dog a challenge; in this way it will quickly pick up your intentions.
