Breed Description


Overview:

Thai Ridgeback is a short-haired breed of dog originating from Thailand. It is considered to be very active with considerable stamina. There is a well-defined ridge at the back hence the “Ridgeback” in the name.

This is a vigilant, intelligent dog which has a mind of its own, with considerable stamina, that is lively and active, but reserved in the company of strangers.

Height:

The shoulder-height is 53-61cm (20 ½ -24in) for dogs and 48-56cm (18 ½ -22in) for bitches.

Temperament:

The company of other household animals does not cause any problems provided the dog grows up with them. They are rather reserved towards strangers.


Coat:

The coat is very short-haired and soft, with a definite ridge of hair along the back (the pile of which grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the hair). They can be blue, silver, chestnut or black.


Care:

The Ridgeback requires little grooming. Brushing occasionally will keep the coat in good condition.

This Thai breed needs quite a lot of exercise. Running alongside a cycle or regular long walks are certainly necessary to keep the dog fit. They have been known to complete various training courses successfully.


Training:

The training of the Thai Ridgeback calls for a soft touch but with a very consistent approach.
