Why some people prefer toy dog breeds against large breeds

If you are a real dog lover, you will understand how it feels to stay without one at any point in your life. Busy lifestyle can greatly limit your ability to keep a dog and same goes for limited space for a dog. In spite of this life imposing reality, some dog lovers still find a way to keep and maintain one. I have a client whose job requires incessant travels and yet he tried to include his dogs in his travel plans.

The worse scenario is when you stay with people that hate to have animals around them. These people who might be: your spouse, father, mother or friend who just can’t tolerate dogs. This can virtually make you give up on owning a dog or make you choose a particular breed of dog.

In my earlier years of practice, I had this client, a Muslim, who was very sick and at the same time loves animals. All his children were schooling abroad and he only has his house helps around with his wife who does not like dogs one bit. He knows quite well that the wife just don’t like dogs around but he cannot stay without a dog himself. He has love for German shepherd dogs which he acquired once but lost the dog a year later due to negligence from his people. He then decided to get a toy dog and chose the Lhasa Apso breed. He chose this breed because he wanted the dog to always stay in his living room where he can always keep an eye on it. The dog stayed in that living room till the man’s death one Wednesday.

I was troubled because I know how he struggled to make sure the dog had a good life. The dog stayed by his feet in the living room each time he is there. My fears were later eliminated when his 19 year old first son called me and asked that we should continue the regular grooming services and other necessary care the dog needed citing the way his father loved the dog before his death. I later inherited the dog when the kids had to go back to school abroad.

Single persons living alone especially those living within neighborhoods with less space for large dogs tend to prefer toy dogs because they can easily be kept indoors. Many dog lovers that are single, be it ladies or men usually keep dogs as companions.

Some people get tired of teddy bears and tend to replace them with toy dogs because these animals present more fun to have around. The distinct behaviors of these toy dogs kind of replace the still foamy uninteresting teddy bears.

Many persons use these toy dogs as gift to people celebrating their birthdays and these recipients end up with no other choice but to care for these dogs.

Some parents buy these breeds of dogs for their children to teach them how to be responsible for something and in many cases as playmate. Parents particularly prefer toy dogs because they can hardly harm the children intentionally.

Some persons love toy dogs because they hardly bark or make noise unnecessarily.
