Why people choose mastiff breeds over German shepherd dog in Nigeria

If you are conversant with Mastiff breeds of dogs and German shepherd dog you will be able to recognize the physical difference in their appearance and their aptitude. There is no doubt that Mastiff dogs possess larger jaws, broader head size, dropping ears, sometimes wrinkled face, muscular build and in many cases intimidating to behold while the German shepherd dog might look like a little normal dog with pointed snout, a little more hair, standing ears, slanting hind quarters and many other marked difference from the mastiff breeds.

First of all, German shepherd dogs are a relatively more popular dog than the mastiff breeds in Nigeria. It’s almost a normal thing for a Nigerian to be gripped with fear at the sight of a mastiff than the German shepherd. Most Nigerians consider German shepherds to be more “trained” even when they are not. The most popular nick name for German shepherd dog is “police dog” here in Nigeria to show the relative awareness of this breed.

The weird looks of Mastiffs especially that of Neapolitan mastiff drive fear into most Nigerians especially those that have little acquaintance with dogs. This is one of the reasons why most dog loving Nigerians love to acquire these breeds as against the German shepherd.

Another reason for the love is the fact that they attract a lot of attention from people. Sometimes, people start to spread gist about these breeds and ignite pride in the owner.

Some Nigerians just like muscular and monster looking dogs with large paws, “big” head and muscular body conformation which the mastiff possess against the German shepherd dog.

The most loved mastiff breeds are Bullmastiff, bulldog, Neapolitan Mastiff, Boerboel, Rottweiler and of resent the cane corsos.
