Bestselling dogs in Nigeria

Most dog lovers in Nigeria especially the financially comfortable ones, go from owning dogs to breeding for sale due to natural forces associated with keeping dogs. In most cases, someone loves a German shepherd dog and gets one to keep and soon he wants to get a company for his dog and gets the opposite sex. These dogs end up mating and giving birth to 9 puppies for instance, another problem arises from the issue of selling or just disposing the puppies and surprisingly, people are so willing to buy these puppies and the owner is inspired to breed more. This is usually the genesis of dog breeding by most breeders in Nigeria. Few breeders started by just starting out with a plan for the business. Many are presently starting dog farms instead of poultry or pig farms.

The issue I have with many Nigerian breeders is the problem of proper planning, especially on which dogs are bestselling and in which region of Nigeria. There are many of other problems of marketing network of selling the puppies. Many make major mistakes in these two areas because they forget they are in business not show.

Which are the bestselling dogs?

Before I name these breeds, let me explain that my own experience is in Abuja city majorly because this is where my veterinary practice is located.

Caucasian breed

The number one bestselling dog in Abuja is the hairy, huge, “wolfy” Caucasian breed of dog. The German shepherd was previously very popular more than any other dog in terms of sales but the Caucasian breed has successfully overtaking it based on my assumption that German shepherds have been generally adulterated by many. What we have now mostly is something-that-looks-like-german-shepherd not the pure breed German shepherd. These Caucasian dogs sell much higher than these German shepherds. Another reason why Caucasian breed is preferred is the fact that they are considered to be good with children, they look very massive and intimidating, they bark well to alert against intruders and they are very good as guard dogs.

Rottweiler

I hope you are not surprised because many Nigerians want a dog that is merciless to thieves and that is why they mostly go for this breed. This dog is also avoided by many because of the stories that they attack children. There are many other Nigerians that love this breed just for their looks and behavior. Breeders tend to sell their Rottweiler puppies with considerable higher returns.

German shepherd

This very innocent breed with worldwide popularity and previously very popular in Nigeria have been greatly mixed with plenty breeds either accidentally or intentionally and the generation of this breed available now are greatly varied. Some breeders will give you a different price for the regular one and another one for “slant back”. That word “slant back” is now popularly used by puppy vendors to describe high worth German shepherd. Nonetheless, there are very reputable breeders of the original German shepherd dog in Nigeria and these guys are too principled because they have special love for the pedigree German shepherds. These people get bookings even before their bitch welp or give birth. The price of this category of German shepherd is above a 100k.

Lhasa Apso

This is the ladies dog, very hairy little creature with very friendly disposition. The Lhasa apso is also in the mess of adulteration with many other breeds especially the terrier & spitz breeds. One reason why breeders go into this unfortunate crossing or breeding is the fact that most ladies request for a WHITE dog. I don’t know if they actually want a holy dog but these requests make many breeders to start borrowing males from other breeds just to satisfy the “white” request. This breed is the number 4 bestselling dog breed.

Neopolitan Mastiff

This breed is gradually getting very popular with lovers of “ugly” dogs. People love the way these breeds are feared in Nigeria due to their looks. There is a great competition between this breed and the Cane corso breed in terms of sales. Many request for this dog but few can afford them. Breeders can cover most of their costs from the sale of one puppy of this breed.

Are you waiting for the 6th? No all others are in the same category. You can hardly get request for these dogs like the top 5 breeds here but let me mention others that might be requested for. These are breeds like: Bullmastiff, Samoyed, Boer boel, American eskimo, Japanese spitz, St. Bernard, bull dog etc.

Let me mention here that there is a growing request for Chihuahua breed in Nigeria. Let me state here that many vendors tend to misinform people and sell dogs like Samoyed and the likes as Chihuahua to intended buyers especially the roadside vendors. Chihuahua is not popular in Nigeria yet but I guess within a little while they will be because the request is getting higher by the day.
